The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and a consortium of Qatari banks led by the Qatar National Bank (QNB) have announced their intention to purchase the iconic English football team Manchester United. This makes it the first ever bid by a Middle Eastern group to acquire one of the world's most successful sporting clubs. The bid is being seen as a sign of Qatar's commitment to investing in the UK and its economy. This article will provide an overview of the Qatari banker-led consortium's bid and the implications it could have on the English Premier League and world football in general.

“In 1909 because the Football Union was growing in strength and because the powers-that-be feared strikes, they issued an ultimatum that players should leave the union or be suspended. Initially, the ban worked, and many players left the union.
However, FA Cup winners Manchester United stood their ground. United captain and union agitator, Charlie Roberts arranged for the suspended players to train at the Manchester Athletic Ground in Fallowfield. The group was nicknamed The Outcasts FC after a photographer came to see them in training, and whilst the players were getting into position, Roberts scrawled the name on a chalkboard.”
Are you proud as a Manchester United fan of that fact?
Prior to the Second World War it was Manchester United fans that voted to place greater emphasis on bringing youth through instead of just buying. That was the start of a great history that this club has had ever since.
Are you proud as a Manchester United fan of that fact?
Manchester United defied the League in 1956 to go into Europe. The year previous Chelsea had complied and did not enter. Matt Busby was strong and far-sighted. He refused to acquiesce. And not only did he go into Europe despite the League’s insistence, he did so, following the now accepted philosophy, with teams that regularly had 9 or even 10 players that were home-grown. That team perished in an air crash. 10 years later it finally won the European Cup with 8 players who had come through the youth system.
Do those facts mean anything to you?
Yet it seems some would be happy to tarnish that history by selling out to a state who, as Jonathan Liew, sports journalist, rightly comments is ‘brutal’ and see buying the club merely as a ‘wing of geopolitics’.
I want nothing to do with them; or indeed with any state ownership. What’s the point of glory if you can’t say to people ‘We’ve got a proud history’ without them saying ‘Yeah? That’s come to an end, hasn’t it’?
Let’s lead the way as did The Outcasts, as did Manchester United fans, as did Sir Matt Busby and as did Sir Alex Ferguson.
In particular remember the importance that United players gave to a working man earning a fair wage. Something that is far from apparent in Qatar. And nor was it just a concern about wages that motivated the players.Iit was about caring for individuals and families, as in:
“A concern relating to injury/death on the pitch. In 1902 a City player had cut his leg on some glass on the pitch, and had died of blood poisoning a week later. He didn’t have the money saved to support his family. The players wanted basic workers’ rights and a compensation to their families” (taken from official Manchester United page on ‘The Outcasts’.
It needs to be spelt out:
“A concern for basic workers’ rights”
I prefer to be an outcast than to take Qatar’s tainted gold. In that there is no glory.
derek mooney
Ok – so the PREMIER LEAGUE WILL DELAY THE DECISION ON THEIR TAKEOVER FOR A YEAR, LIKE THEY DID WITH NEWCASTLE? THE BRITISH NATIONAL PRESS WILL CONDUCT A WITCH HUNT OVER THEIR SUITABILITY OVER THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS RECORD? YEH RIGHT, ONE RULE FOR ONE…
Basant jayant
no money to help muslims in syria and turkey…..but enough money to buy football club…..
they are only united when cause is terrorism…..

From The Guardian in February 2021
“It has now been revealed that 6500 workers have died since the world cup was awarded” That list will certainly have increased since then.
These workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have contributed on average 12 deaths per week. They constitute, according to an estimate in 2020, 44.2% of the migrant work force (migrant employees in total make for 95%). Their pay & conditions is atrocious. It amounts to slavery, not just slavery but legalized slavery, a form of slavery that is endorsed by The Government of that country.
Accepting this without any protest is equally an endorsement of keeping people in bondage. Already we have had The Two Gazzas telling us that when they went to the World Cup they would make their concerns vocal. Which they did, in a mealy mouthed sort of way. Mr. Neville, indeed, wagged his finger at those who judged. That we should look to ourselves “Are we perfect?” he admonished? A cry that was previously made by Qatar’ foreign minister who accused the west of being ‘hypocrites’. And then Sig Infantino who used the same words. How I detest that word ‘hypocrite’. It is the cry used so often by those confronted by their crimes or their being compromised.
Well, the stern words of The Gazzas and others worked a treat, innit? Part of the reason Qatar is now bidding, apparently, is that the world cup was such a spiffing success. They are so proud, bless ’em.
They now want to spread their tentacles throughout the strongest, richest league in the world. They aim for it to be so bloated in money and glory, that even the mighty Barcelona and Real Madrid will succumb. They will naturally bask in that glory “See. Do you understand now how effective a slave economy is? – Don’t thank us, it’s not necessary.” And meanwhile, The Gazzas, like the footballers, they will have stayed in plush hotels built by slaves, watched in stadiums built by slaves and they will have applauded England’s footballers for taking the knee – a brave and noble act of human awareness. All this in a stadium built by slaves. And not slaves from before we were born but slaves that are living and dying now – legally.
Gary Neville and David Beckham made a documentary prior to the world cup where they sat in the grounds of a nearly built hotel – the one England players were due to stay in (if memory serves me right). And as they sat there, they didn’t mull the whereabouts of the serfs, instead they lauded the modern professional footballer for his political awareness and willingness to stand (or kneel) up (or down) against injustice. Really? Were they serious? ‘Well, yes’ they might protest – unless that means taking a yellow card, of course. ‘“Now, If they’d threatened us with a public flogging, then we’d have shown ’em. But a yellow card? The cunning rotters”.
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about some things being beyond the pale. What Qatar does is beyond the pale. Actually, ‘They’re brutal’ would be more to the point.
FIFA’s “Human Rights Policy”:
“FIFA touches the lives of millions of people all over the world. Through its competitions and activities to develop football, FIFA generates jobs and investment in infrastructure, promotes the values of equality and fairness and strengthens social bonds among people and countries.”
Am I the only one confused?
If people accept, without some protest – be it in words or be it in deeds, then you are complicit in slavery. And if you accept, in the same manner, the other bid that has now emerged from Saudi Arabia then you are complicit in more than just slavery. Not to worry you can always redeem yourself by showing your outrage about Mason Greenwood and The Glazers.
