When I lived in Tokyo in late 1970’s, I remember it was more like 600 yen to the dollar. I just checked historical exchange site and it’s listing just under 300 yen per dollar. Anyway it was a great time to be in Japan, for a strong dollar.

Hey John, not sure if you mention it later on or not but at the beginning you said Japan has lots of dept as well which is true BUT the thing you missed to mention there is that the Dept Japan has is mostly inside Japan unlike other Countries that have lots of depts in other Countries. This actually makes a hugh difference.
