Here’s a glimpse on the complex nature of the DRC issue: this poor mother of twins and the man interviewed are rwandophone, and have a kinyarwanda names. They are part of a huge rwandophone community, native to east DRC. Some of the other ethnicities deny that community’s right to citizenship in DRC, prompting some inter-ethnic violence that creates refugees. There are also conflicts among other ethnicities about land and resources that also prompt the creation of more armed groups to…protect their communities.

On the other side, there are foreign armed groups like FDLR, ADF, RED Tabara, etc led by extremist ideologies that seek to topple governments in neighbouring countries and spread a reign of terror. They constantly attack local communities and also conduct a few raids in congo’s neighbours. This also leads to foreign military interventions, and the creation of groups like M23 and Mai Mai, again with the purpose of fighting these foreign terrorist groups.

All those armed groups, eventually solicit help from domestic and foreign supporters, in exchange for benefits like mining resources, etc. And because since the congolese state’s creation has always been led by cowardly and corrupt elites who live hundreds of kilometres away from the damage their incompetence results in, the endless violence found in east congo never ends.
